Character Profiles

Shanao / Yoshitsune Minamoto

Born the youngest daughter of Yoshitomo Minamoto, Shanao was brought to Kurama Temple upon the death of her father in the Heiji Rebellion. There, the monks were instructed to raise her as a boy who could one day grow strong enough to overthrow the Heike.

Trained and raised by Kakunichi, Shanao exceled in matters of military strategy and in combat.

Despite the expectations of those around her, Shanao has always dreamed of a quiet, peaceful life. Having been torn away from her family at a very young age, she yearns for the love of a family.

Yoritomo Minamoto

Born the youngest son of Yoshitomo Minamoto, Yoritomo’s father and older brothers were all killed by the Heike in the Heiji Rebellion. Just fourteen at the time, Yoritomo’s life was spared from execution by Kiyomori Taira’s step-mother, Lady Ikenozeni.

Instead, Yoritomo was forced to live the hard life of an exile in the land of Izu. After many lonely years, Yoritomo’s heart became cold and isolated. Now he lives with only a single mission, a mission for which he will risk his life: to restore the Genji Clan with himself as its leader.

Tomomori Taira

Fourth son of Kiyomori Taira, and graceful in both words and appearances. From the outside he would appear to have little use for war, however, he has time and time again demonstrated himself to be a fierce warrior, a superb general, and a trusted advisor to Kiyomori.

Though the Heike appear to be at the height of their power, Tomomori senses a change in the wind, and knows that all things in this world are one day bound to perish.

Noritsune Taira

Nephew of Kiyomori Taira, and son of Norimori Taira, Noritsune holds nothing but contempt for the soft, decadent clan the Heike has become. Though he may not like the present aristocratic nature of his clan, he takes deep pride in his role as a samurai and is said to be one of the clan’s finest warriors. Unlike Tomomori, Noritsune does not see the gathering storm on the horizon for the Heike.

Being the same age as Shanao, he feels a deep sense of competition with her.

Benkei Musashibo

Previously a monk at Mount Hiei, Benkei was expelled from that temple after an incident with the Heike. Since then, he has been stealing the swords of Heike officials in response. After being defeated by Shanao, he pledged to become Shanao’s vassal.

Kind, gentle, and good-natured, Benkei and Shanao both share a history of growing up in temples and a dissatisfaction with the brutal rule of the Heike.

Shungen

Born a child of Shigenari Minamoto, a vassal of Shanao’s father, Yoshitomo Minamoto, Shungen was brought to Kurama Temple upon the death of his father at the same time as Shanao. Because the two have been together since they were very young, Shungen is aware that Shanao is a woman.

Like Shanao, Shungen was raised at Kurama Temple by Kakunichi. While not as skilled with a sword as Shanao, Shungen is extremely bright and well-read. Despite his small stature and kind appearances, Shungen is extremely brave and protective of Shanao.

Gameplay Announcements

Has Birushana finally given us what we’ve always wanted, and made the hot “undateable” side characters dateable?

In Birushana, you take on the role of Shanao / Yoshitsune Minamoto (name customizable) and, depending on the dialogue choices and actions you choose, the story will advance down one of the five main routes, resulting in a ‘Happy’ or ‘Tragic’ Ending. After completing any given route, an “If” ending may become available, presenting a new route with a sub-character.

Protagonist Name Change

You can change the name of the main character at the beginning of the game by inputting up to ten alphabetic characters. Likely due to the clan-focus of the story, the last name of ‘Minamoto’ cannot be changed, but the childhood name ‘Shanao’ can be changed in some cases.

However, it’s also worth nothing that if you select the default name, the name of the main character will be fully voice acted by the other characters throughout the game. If you choose to customize the protagonist’s name, it will not be voiced.

Love Catch

The Love Catch system helps guide you by immediately showing you how your choice has impacted the story.

After a choice is made, five flowers, each corresponding to one of the lead male characters, will appear on screen. Open flowers indicate the your choice has deepened your relationship with that character. The colour on the edge of the frame indicates which character ability has increased as a result of your decision.

If you’d rather make your choices without knowing the impact on the story, then you can turn off this system via the settings menu.

Information Screen

The information screen allows you to check your relationship compatibility with each character, as well as view the main character’s abilities. Remember, both relationship compatibility and character abilities will impact the story!

Dictionary

You can use the in-game dictionary to view explanations of the historical terms used throughout the story.

Flowchart

You can use the Flowchart to check your progress throughout the various storylines, and replay previously viewed chapters of the story.

  • Thank you for the nice overview! It has definitely made me more interested in playing the game.
There are routes for side-characters?? Wow. 😀

Do you have any “favourites” that you look forward to playing?

    • I love Makoto Furukawa as a voice actor, so I’m keen to play Yoritomo Minamoto’s route, but Tomomori Taira looks like my typical favourite love interest (silvery blues, graceful, and potentially a bit of a dark side), and he’s voiced by Fukuyama Jun (who voices Orochi in Dairoku!). To be honest, I can see the appeal in all of them, but those are the two I have my eye on at the moment ^_^ Do any of the love interests catch your eye? Or do you think you’ll give Birushana a miss?

      • You sound like a fellow seiyuu fan! Since I love Yuuichiro Umehara’s voice, I look forward to him. Although I’m not sure if the LI will actually be my type. (And he reminds me of IkeSen Kennyo, who was nice but not a top LI.)

I keep hearing about Makoto Furukawa (my friend loves him, too!). But unfortunately, I haven’t yet played a game with him… That aside, from a purely aesthetical point of view, Yoritomo Minamot’s is totally my type.

Oho! Orochi’s seiyuu. 😀 Maybe that’ll be kinda like dating Orochi? I’m not sure about him, either, since he gives me Shion (VariBari) as well as Chevalier (IkePri) vibes. I didn’t like the first but immensely enjoyed the second. But your description of him (silver, blue, maybe dark) sounds so appealing! Let me say it like this: if he’s a kuudere, I’m pretty sure I’ll like him. 😉

Yes, I’m definitely getting Burishana because I love the setting and the art. And now that I know more about it, I’m looking forward to it even more.

        • I’m also a seiyuu fan!! Makoto Furukawa voiced Allan in Cupid Parasite, and he voices some of my favourite anime characters, like Achilles in Fate: Apocrypha, and Sherlock in Moriarty The Patriot ❤

I'm also really looking forward to Birushana! The more I learn about it, the more interested I become. And I also love kuuderes, so here's hoping we both enjoy Tomomori Taira's route!

          • Oh, I haven’t watched anime since… 2010, I believe (except for Sleepy Princess – so cute!).

So I just went to Makoto Furukawa’s Wikipedia site to see if he was in anything I knew. And, oh my! He voices Sylvain Gautier in Fire Emblem 3 Houses!! I can’t believe it! (cue: internal squealing) Slyvain is my favourite character in the game so far. Ahhh! 🥰 (Sorry for the abundance of exclamation marks.)

He has a great voice. No wonder you like it so much. 😉
