Obey Me! The Anime | Episode 2 | Anime Reviews

Episode 2 of the Obey Me Anime is a wholesome short featuring Levi, Beel, and Belphie (with a brief cameo by Sheep MC). I was looking forward to Sheep MC making an appearance in the series, and I love that the writers made this decision to avoid forcing a gender, personality, or appearance onto the game’s main character.
Note: the reason for using a cute, purple sheep as a stand-in for MC is that the default icon for your player profile in the game is a cute, purple sheep. By using this in the anime, the writers avoided introducing a canon MC to a game that deliberately doesn’t have a canon MC.
Cameo aside, this episode was delightfully wholesome. Levi’s voice actor, Kada Satoshi, was the star of the show – the way his voice went high-pitched when he was embarrassed or anxious, and then dropped suddenly when he became serious or exasperated, perfectly captures Levi’s fluctuating emotions. He’s mastered the art of ‘excited otaku rambling’, and overall, Kada Satoshi and Levi took the spotlight this episode.
I especially loved the interactions between Levi, Beel, and Belphie, with Belphie somehow managing to lazily cheer Beel on without sounding insincere or sarcastic. It was just three brothers hanging out and playing video games together, with enough playful bickering to create a wholesome family-time vibe. It felt like a snapshot in the daily lives of the demon brothers– and I loved it.
I think the decision to keep this anime as a series of shorts (each episode is around 5 minutes long) was a great idea. The animation is smoother and prettier than I was expecting for an otome adaptation, and the shorter episode length allows the writers to focus on quality, over quantity. It’s also a great way for a variety of ideas to be tested, and maybe, one day, if this series does well, Obey Me might be convinced to produce a full-length anime…
